A Creative Journey Through Inspiring Art and Photography Books

I love art and photography books! There’s an indescribable satisfaction in flipping through the pages of a large coffee table book, especially when it’s filled with the works of artists and photographers who have left a mark on my creative journey.

While minimizing and organizing my life, there are certain books that I cannot part with, so I’ve compiled a list of my absolute must-have books – the ones that continue to be a wellspring of inspiration in both my life and art.

(Note: The book title amazon links are affiliate links that help support this blog and my art. Additionally, these books may also be available at your local library, so consider checking there first!)

David Muench – Ancient America

David Muench’s photography has been a constant inspiration since my days photographing the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico in the early 2000s. His manipulation of light and capturing wide expanses gives me creative ideas, whether it be in my photography or my paintings.

MC Escher – The Graphic Work (any MC Escher art book, really)

Without a doubt, MC Escher holds the title of my favorite artist. His work, encountered since my high school days, motivates me to explore new perspectives – both literally and figuratively. Each piece serves as a catalyst for trying new things in my own artistic endeavors.

Brian Froud – The World of the Dark Crystal

Brian Froud’s whimsical fae art has enchanted me since childhood, and considering my deep affection for The Dark Crystal movie, this is a great book to have for inspiration. The inclusion of sketches and concepts in this book gets me motivated in sketching sessions and ignites the creative spark.

Alex Grey – The Net of Being

Having seen Alex Grey’s art in person when I was in Arizona, this book is a treasure that I can’t part with. Again, the inclusion of sketches provides insight into the crafting of art pieces, serving as motivation for my own artistic pursuits.

From Myst to Riven – A Collection of Rand and Robyn Miller’s Work Compiled by Richard Kadrey

One of the very first PC games I ever played was Myst, and it marked a pivotal moment in my creative journey back in 1995. My mind was blown with the complex puzzles and the universe the Miller brother’s built. This book, filled with concepts and sketches, takes me back to the time when my perception of art changed, and I began to experiment with 3D digital art.

Art Forms in Nature – Ernst Haeckel

Nature’s marvels unfold in Ernst Haeckel’s book, where monochromatic images showcase intricate shapes and patterns. A great compilation of drawings of the natural world.

Audubon Society Field Guide Books

Often overlooked for inspiration, this series of books by the Audubon Society provides full-color photographs of various natural elements. Perfect for sparking creativity or gaining specific details about animals, cloud formations, and the like. These compact guides are a valuable resource when you don’t have much space for the bigger books.

Honorable Mention: Bird by Bird by Kate Lamont

A departure from the visual arts, this book about writing and life by Kate Lamont is my go-to for motivation in any creative project. Her funny, smart, and real writing style makes it a highly recommended read for overcoming creative hurdles.

So, there you have it – my list of inspiring art and photography books!
